A Modest Proposition to align Geriatrics and Long Term Care Medicine

Approximately 10 million Americans have long-term care needs;1 including 2 million community-based elders who suffer impairments akin to those of the nation’s 1.6 million nursing home residents.2 In light of projections regarding the growth of the elderly population in the coming decades, particularly those over 85, the size of the elderly population requiring long term care who also have complex chronic conditions will likely double in 30 years. While the population most in need of specialized geriatrics care is going to increase, the supply of geriatricians has been declining.

Three fifths of adults would like to see hospitals and healthcare providers penalised for failing to help older people in pain according to a report released recently. The report also highlighted a lack of confidence in health professionals that can alleviate pain and a dismissal of pain in older people. It is unacceptable that more than half the people polled by Help The Aged felt that health professionals dismiss pain in older people as “old age”.

Twice Daily Ginkgo Does Not Decrease Dementia

Supplementation with Ginkgo biloba is not effective in decreasing dementia among elderly patients with normal cognition or those with mild cognitive impairment, according to research published in the Nov. 19 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
